If we suppose Worcestershire to be a real-world analogue to the Shire, and use the land prices there, we can calculate another minimum value for the mithril coat. Tolkien grew up in Worcestershire, and viewed it as his home (Letter 144). Karen Wynn Fonstad estimates the area of the Shire to be approximately 21,400 mi 2 (55425.746 km 2) in The Atlas of Middle-earth. Gandalf says it’s worth is greater than the value of the Shire. That’s still chump change for the world’s billionaires, so let’s try a different approach. Even if you use a mass of 10kg for the vest, it would only cost $3,620,045. The vest did have jewels in it as well, but without more information estimating their worth would be difficult. According to Wikipedia, “A modern hauberk…weighs roughly 10 kg (22 lb).” Around 10 kg seems in line with most of the information I found, but that’s probably too high for Bilbo’s vest since “You hardly feel any weight when you put it on.” If we arbitrarily cut this down to 2 kg (for context, an entire outfit for an adult male might weigh in the range of 1-2 kg), with the current price of gold ($36,200.45/kg at the time of writing), we get the following math: $36,200.45įrankly that seems a little low to me, considering the rarity of mithril.
